The Japanese art of crocheting tiny plush animals, dolls, or food is known as amigurumi. Though crocheting is by far the most popular technique, amigurumi can be made by crocheting or knitting.
In general, all of these free crochet dragon patterns can be considered amigurumi, but they are usually on the smaller side.

Best Yarn for a Crochet Dragon
In most cases, cotton yarn is the best choice for making amigurumi as it has the ability to maintain its shape well and can be easily washed when needed. Cotton yarn makes firm stitches, which are great for these kinds of projects.
Acrylic yarn is also a common choice for amigurumi patterns because it is versatile, comes in many colors, and is hard-wearing. When making toys for babies or children, premium acrylic blends can give off a nice, soft, and smooth feel. Most acrylic yarn is also very affordable, so it won’t cost you a lot to get all the colors you need for your project.
Safe Practices with Amigurumi
If you are making amigurumi or other toys for children, there are some things to keep in mind. For babies and toddlers, you should embroider eyes and other facial features on the doll instead of using safety eyes.
Despite the name, safety eyes can come loose from the project and pose a choking hazard. Safety eyes can be swapped out for embroidered elements created with basic stitching. French knots, back stitches, embroidery needles, floss, and contrasting or dark yarn can be used to create eyes and a mouth if desired. Or make sleepy eyes with simple straight stitches.
Useful Tips for Crocheting Dragon Amigurumi
Dragons may be worked in different directions and pieces, sometimes flat and sometimes in the round. For parts worked in the round, you will often need to make a magic ring (also known as a “magic circle”). This helps keep the top stitches of each part of your dragon tight.
For the most part, single crochet (or sc) is used to complete dragons and other amigurumi creatures. Other fundamental stitches like half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc) as well as unique stitches are occasionally used to sculpt various parts of the dragon. You should also be familiar with the chain stitch (ch) and the slip stitch (sl st).
It helps to be comfortable with how to increase and decrease in crochet as well since the pieces often get progressively bigger or smaller as you stitch them.
Use stitch markers to help note where the end of the round is if you are working in continuous rounds.
Supplies Needed to Make an Amigurumi Dragon
Most of the time, amigurumi patterns use a smaller crochet hook than would normally be used with the weight of yarn the pattern calls for. This is so the stitches will be tighter, which will make the finished item look cleaner and prevent any holes from allowing the stuffing to show through.
As mentioned above, using a stitch marker can help you see where each round ends so you know when to move on to the next round or section of the pattern instructions. You’ll also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle (aka yarn needle) for trimming yarn, weaving in ends, and sewing parts of your dragon together.
If you are using safety eyes, you will need those as well (or use embroidery as mentioned above). You’ll also need stuffing for your doll. A Popsicle stick, pencil, or knitting needle can be helpful in getting the stuffing where you need it to be in small spaces.
